Show BLACKLEG IS TO BE AVOIDED Infectious Disease Usually Attacks Cattle Between Ages of Six Months and Two Years. The infectious disease known as blackleg usually affects cattle between the ages of six months and two and one-half years. It gains entrance to the tissues through small wounds on the skin. A swelling occurs beneath the skin on the hindquarters, the shoulder, or the lower portion of the neck. If the hand is passed over this swelling-it crackles, and if cut into, a yellowish, bloody fluid flows out. The carcasses of dead animals should be buried or burned and the spots where they died should be disinfected. The healthy cattle should be removed re-moved from infected pastures and all susceptible cattle should be vaccinated. |
