Show LDS Leaders Give Inspiration At Stake Conference Joseph Fielding Smith, of the Council of the Twelve, replaced Elder Harold B. Lee, who had been announced as Conference speaker at Deseret stake Conference Confer-ence held Saturday and Sunday, April 22 and 23. Elder Lee had been sent to a conference in another an-other stake at the last minute resulting re-sulting in the change. Due to this change, the stake was fortunate in having special musical numbers from Mrs. Joseph Jo-seph F. Smith, the former Jessie Evans, who has achieved much fame in the musical world in Utah. Mrs. Smith sang solo numbers in both morning and afternoon sessions, ses-sions, and sang with the Singing Mothers in the afternoon meeting. Seek for Truth In his talks in the morning and afternoon sessions Elder Smith urged members to seek for truth, prove to themselves that the work they were doing was truth and stand by it with much strength. He stated that many people throughout the world take covenants without the proper authority au-thority behind them. He stated, "The L. D. S. church is a church of covenants covenants between mankind and God. The Lord offers men covenants as a way by which they can come back to Him and live with Him. No covenants pertaining per-taining to the salvation of man can be entered into unless God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ are parties to the covenant in fact, they give us the covenant, cove-nant, and God must put the stamp , of approval on that covenant." Welfare Plan Groups Brother Childs, of the General Church Welfare Commission, explained ex-plained to the group that the Welfare Wel-fare Plan is not a new plan in the church, but that it was revealed re-vealed long ago, and quoted scrip ture in the Doctrine and Covenants to show that this is so. "The purpose pur-pose of the Welfare Plan," stated Brother Childs, "is to comfort those who stand in need of comfort," com-fort," and that it is not only to provide food and clothing for those who need it, but it is a way of rehabilitation for these people and it develops in others the unselfishness un-selfishness which God demands of His people before they can enter the highest kingdom. The welfare plan is necessary to make possible the covenants one makes at baptism," bap-tism," continued Brother Childs. Reports were made from two missionaries who recently returned return-ed from the field. They were Harold Har-old Western and Erwin Prestwichc. They told some of their experiences experi-ences while in the mission field, and gave their testimonies as to the truthfulness and greatness of this type of work. President Morris conducted the morning session and President M. Ward Moody the afternoon session. ses-sion. Each of them talked with the group, urging them to keep the commandments of God and to (Continued on back page) Conference live as their religion teaches them to do. Pres. Morris commented on the Creed of President George Albert Al-bert Smith, reading this creed as a means of encouragement for all to follow. Music for the morning session was furnished by the Desert Sentinels, Sen-tinels, with vocal solos given by LaVoy Tolbert and by Mrs. Joseph F. Smith. In the afternoon the music was given by the Singing Mothers, with Mrs. Smith singing a vocal solo and solo part to one of the songs.
