Show The New Book. If there Is now before the American publlcsueh a wildly sensational book as the published circular on our front page seems to Indicate, then It Is to be regiettcd that there Is no law under which the authors may be prosecuted, the house publishing it suppressed and the sale of books stopped. No copy of the book has reached here yet, and it can hardly be criticised Intelligently but it Is hardly probable that the representations rep-resentations of the circular arc over drawn, and If they are, the publishers deserve all that may be heaped upon them as a result of that misrepresentation. misrepresent-ation. Sucli a book Is undoubtedly a species of enterprise on the part of men who sec In the inllamed condition of the public mind an opportunity to reap a rich harvest at the expense of their credulity, and if the publication contains con-tains what it is represented to con tain, and the public accepts that book In good faith it will accept a publication publica-tion which even the most violent opposition op-position in Utah, knowing the sltua-tlou, sltua-tlou, can not but spurn as quackery, yellow lournallsm base,mlsrepresenta-tlon, base,mlsrepresenta-tlon, and a hurtful thing to the cause which It seeks to espouse. It must be Judged from the circular that the book is of the blood-and-thunder, ten-cent dime novel style, written in language calculated to appeal ap-peal to the sensational mind and to work upon the very licentious disposition dispos-ition on the part of the Eastern and Western public, which It condemns In Utah. Such a publication cannot emanate from a mind capable of grasp ing the higher and better things of lire and least of all is it Chi istian. This clicular sets out that this book "will be taken up by the women of America as an evidence of the Indignant Indig-nant piotests of tho best women of the country." We believe the American Amer-ican Publishing Co. Is a liar on tills point. This Is tho "Eastern Editor' writing, and while ho believes that thousands of eastern women have medled in this business knowing nothing noth-ing on cartli about it, wc believe that such a book as lcprescntcd by this circular will not bo accepted by tho intelligent women of America. If it Is, they will prove tho victims of enterprising en-terprising but unscrupulous men who havo only their personal llnancial Interests In-terests at heart. The "Eastern Edltoi" has never at any time piofessed a readiness to accept ac-cept the Mormon religion thero Is much here with which we can not agree, Just tho same as in tho llaptlst, Methodist, Unitarian creeds but In the tlrst Issue of Tiik Looan Rk-1'uiii.ican Rk-1'uiii.ican we stated that we believed all opposition to the Mormon people except In a christian way should be stopped, and wo hold to that today. Publication of such material as is tills book can not bo Christian. This people peo-ple Is not a sect that should be driven from the shores. We have found them like other humans and like other denomlnations.bandcd together for their own protection. There Is much good heio and if tho opposition wcie wholly Christian It would spread the good as far as tho bad. If tho Christian ministers of Utah ically desire de-sire to "save" this peoplo tlioy would make it known to Die world that they are worth saving and not leave tho impression that thero Is nothing hero but that which should bo ciushcd. |
