Show Conference Rates. TlicO. S. L. people In Salt Lake appear ap-pear to think that the present conference confer-ence rates aic entirely satisfactory to the people In the country, and their evidence Is the number that attend from time to time. The people can clearly understand what course to pursue pur-sue In order to bring about a reduction of the rates. Tiik Rkpuiimcan bllleves the people peo-ple will yet sec it to their advantage to do the one thing necessary to secure se-cure the deshed lesult. As stated be-foie, be-foie, Tiik Rkpuiimcan is in this tight to stay, and Is not discouraged over the unprecedented numbers at the leccnt le-ccnt conference; Instead this paper predicted that the present Smoot agitation agi-tation would take larger numbers than ever Into Salt Lake. The matter stands as before. The people of Logan city pay a M.feO rate and should have a $2.50 late, such as is accorded even a small body of people who desire to make a special trip. Rates should be reduced proportionately proportion-ately throughout the valley. Thero is another conference next fall, and If the people will enter this light In the right way, It Is possible that they may seucre a reduction in rates by that time. If not by that time, then by the next conference or the next. The rail road sa say the demand for rates must come fiom the people. Then let the people demand their rights. Tills matter will be followed up by this paper and the people will have an opportunity to aid In accomplishing the desired end. It is up to the people to say whether the present conditions are to prevail. In tho near future! petitions will be prepared for signatures, signa-tures, and the grievance presented to tho highest authority In the railroad service. The people are urged to go further than this they should sec that this matter is taken Into the county conventions and from there to the State Legislature that the State may interpose and tlx a maximun rate in railroad fares in the States of Utah and Idaho. This is doing no moie than has been dono in other states. As the matter now stands tho railroads are at. liberty to charge what they please without icstrlction. It Is time for the people to take action In their own behalf, if they expect a change; if not the present rate will prevail. |
