Show On the Road Question I EXPRESSIONS ASKED FOR. I The following letter addressed to the major and town councils of the various committees of the countv Is self-evplanatoij. Logan, Utah, April 7th, 1!H. Dear Sir: -There has for some time, as jou are no doubt awaie, been a great deal of discussion of the '-Road Situation" In this County. Public opinion seems entirely In favor of adoption of some piactleal plan for the hnpiovcment of the county loads, and with this end In view the County Commlssioneis have taken the matter Into consldeiation and advisement. They realle that, an undertaking of this kind should be approached with the greatest caie and deliberation. Among the things to Oe consldeied aie: First The kind of load vl.: Whether Wheth-er an oidlnary grade built of giavel, or a tegular macadamled toad. Second The means of transporting the material and upon tills point the expiesslons of opinion seem to be diversified, to-wlt: Some advocate the bulldl'ig of an electric railway to be used first as a means of transporting gravel, lock, etc. and afterward to bo cither sold oi held and operated as an Investment by the county. Otheis advocate tho material being hauled by team letting the workout by contract while still others say that this method is a relic of the past and in turn advocate the purchase of a gravel tiain with all tie necessary trackage, lock crusher, road roller, etc. While as yet the commissioners have no definite Information toglveas to the cost of either of tho pioposi-tlons pioposi-tlons I have mentioned I submit herewith here-with an offer made by a local firm to sell to the county all the necessary equipment of engine, cars, track, iolcr, rock erushcrs, etc. for a complete com-plete gravel train with prices attached. Rut the most hnpoi taut featuie to be considered Is the manner of pioviding pio-viding for the cost of any method that may be selected. There are two wajs of meeting this situation vi: Ry the levj ofa legujar road tax or by bonding the county. The County Commissioners fully sense and rcalle the ingcnt necessity for good roads and the magnitude of the task It will be to build them and they do not feel like taking the entile en-tile responsibility of deciding the various var-ious matters I have mentioned. They therefore respectfully suggest thatjou call a muss meeting of the taxpajers of your town and present tne matter to them for their consider- utlon and after a careful deliberation il give the commissioners the benefit of jl their counsel and advice In the form !H or icsoliitlons. ' H I might add that the deplorable H condition of our roads lias become uhl 'iH versally lecognled and the situation JH demands that hciolc measures be in- liH augurutcd at once In order to prevent the utter stagnation of business dur- 'IH lug certain seasons of the j ear and for JH this icason the commlssioneis lequest iM thatjou act promptly in this matter H as they should be glad to hear from ifll every town in the county by Monday jH Apiil the Kith H Thanking jou in advance for jour pal Interest In the matter I am. Yours Respectfully, J. N. Laiisks, County Clerk. HH |
