Show WANDERING LAKE IN ASIA. There arc several "floating" islands in cxistenco well known to scientists, but the only "wandering" lake over heard of is Lake Nor, in tho Gobi desert, in Asia, which phenomenon phe-nomenon was recently accounted for by tho fact that tho Tarim river, entering en-tering tho lake from the west, brings down during tho period of high water late in summer a great quantity quan-tity of silt, which has tho effect of driving the lake, lying on tho level floor of tho desert, toward tho southeast. south-east. Hut tho summer wind, drifting drift-ing tho surface sand and darkening tho heavens with dust, blows generally gen-erally from tho northeast, and it, too, tends to drivo tho lako before it. The combined effect of tho urging by tho wind and tho river is to force the lako southward. |
