Show one-on-one basketball One hundred fifty four boys, 9 to 14 years of age, from Iron County are participating in the new 4-H One-On-One Basketball Program. The boys from the Cedar City area meet each Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Cedar Jr. High School. During the first half hour, lessons are presented to the entire group by qualified people of the community. com-munity. To date Marva Esplin, USU Extension Home Economist has given the lesson on, "Food Makes the Difference". SUSC Basketball Coach Stan Jack presented the lesson on, "Skills, Conditioning and Self Discipline". Steve Lunt of the SUSC Athletic Department presented the lesson on, "First Aid for Athletic Injuries". After the lesson material has been discussed the boys break into their small groups, by age, and utilize all six baskets in each of the two gyms at the Cedar Jr. High School. Adult leaders work with each of the smaller groups with the help of college P.E. students as referees. Adult leaders working with the boys are Kim Jones, Paul Radmall, Clinton Hunt, Ken Esplin, Morris Shirts, Doug Wood, Larry Neff, and Van Esplin. The boys will meet eight times and will finish on February 22 in an area play-off with Beaver, Iron, Washington, Garfield, and Kane Counties. Winners of the area play-off in each age group will compete for state honors in Logan at the Utah State University Spectrum on March 4. Lynn Esplin, Iron County Extension Agent in charge of the program expressed appreciation to the Iron County School District, SUSC Athletic Department and the Community for their cooperation and support in this educational program for young boys. |
