Show Redmen down Flyers fake league lead Billed as the game of the season the battle between the Cedar High School Redmen and the Dixie Flyers, staged Friday night at St. George, didn't live up to expectations. Rather than a close battle between the two traditional rivals the game was a near runaway for the Redmen as they defeated the Flyers 78-64. The final score was not a true indication of the game as the Cedar City crew built up a 20 point margin in the third period and coasted to the win. Coby Leavitt led the way for the Redmen but he had lots of help, particularly from a pair of brothers, Steve and Mike Hair who make up the forward line for Coach Dick Ilobbs. With the Hair brothers hitting from outside, Leavitt taking everything inside and some help from the guard line the Flyers were never really in the contest. The Redmen reeled off six straight points to open the scoring, and although the Flyers narrowed the margin to just two at 8-6, it was really the only time that the game was close. Bruce Hurst of the Flyers, a junior, who had a personally outstanding game, kept the Flyers kicking, but aside from his effort the host Flyers were outclassed. Kip Staheli, the leading scorer throughout the season for the Flyers, failed to score in the first period, had eight at the end of the third period and wound up with 16, mostly in the fourth period when the battle was already lost. Hurst was the top scorer in the game with 28 points. Staheli was the only other Flyer in double figures with 16. For the Redmen Leavitt led the scoring with 22 followed by 16 by Mike Hair, 15 by Steve Hair, and 12 by Scott Burns. The victory for the Redmen gave them the lead in the 2A Region Eight race with a 2-0 record. It was the first league loss for the Flyers as they remain in second place in the standings at 2 and 1. In the first quarter of Play the Redmen moved out to a seven point margin at one point but Hurst, who accounted for the first eight and 10 in the period, kept the Flyers alive. In the second period, leading by three, the Redmen burst to a 10 point margin with Leavitt, Steve and Mike Hair and Blackner all contributing to the scoring. In another spurt, with the aid of Scott Burns, the Redmen scored 10 unanswered points to take a 40-25 lead. Staheli pumped in two buckets near the end of the period to narrow the margin to just 11 points at halftime. But it was the third period that iced the voctory as the Redmen again controlled the action and moved to a 20 point advantage in the period. The fourth quarter, plagued by fouls, was anti-climatic, despite the fact that the Flyers were able to cut away at the lead. Cedar City 78 Leavitt 7 8-9 22 S.
