Walunas will succeed D. Amasa Stones, who served in that capacity for nearly 25 years until his death in December. The new Fair President has residented in Iron County since September of 1971 when he moved here to direct public relations activities at Brian Head Ski area. He later opened the Swiss Village in Parowan in July 1973. Active in community affairs Walunas is currently serving as Post Commander of the Parowan American Legion Post No. 20 and is First Vice President of the Parowan Lions Club. Art and his family have entertained en-tertained extensively throughout the state with many musical performances. The Walunas have four children: Anna, a freshman at Dixie College; Ed, a senior at Parowan High School; Mary Ann a sophomore and Joey, who is a seventh grade student at Parowan. Following his appointment to the position Walunas issued a statement to residents of the county soliciting their support and acknowledging the efforts of his predecessor. Statement Text Dear Citizens of Iron County: As most of you may know at this time, we have recently lost a most distinguished and loved man. His absence from the community will leave a gap difficult to fill. He will be missed by many. He shall not only be missed for his civic and church affairs, but he will also be missed for the man he was among us.. a gentle man with words of kindness kind-ness and encouragement for all. A man of high ideals, a religious and patriotic man who was concerned about people., his family, his friends, his church, his community and his country, America. America the Beautiful, which is exemplified to its fullest right here in Iron County with its magnificant green mountains and fertile valleys. This is the land that Amasa Stones loved and cherished so much., he knew and recognized all these things and did his utmost to preserve them as such.. He was a hard and sincere worker and even at the end, at age 77 he was still active. Just a matter of days ago, he spoke to me at length about ideas he was formulating for the Bicentennial Bi-centennial Celebration which will be a part of the fair. This event will commemorate the hardships and struggles endured by the American Pioneers to build and establish the foundation foun-dation for this great country. These sturdy Pioneers left us a heritage, a heritage we can all be thankful for and proud of, the true spirit of America. We also can be proud of the Pioneer Spirit that Amasa Stones left us. He was indeed a stalwart example of manhood, a proud, yet humble man with qualities that made him esteemed and respected in this community. He too, has left "Footprints in The Sand", for us to follow. The Commissioners of Iron County have asked me to take on one of Mr. Stones successful projects, that of Chairman of the Iron County Fair. I have, with a great deal of thought and concern, con-cern, agreed to do so. I realize that it is a big job, but with the already successful format that has been laid out, all the good people that have been involved in previous Fairs, and the momentum from last years Fair, we can have a success in 1975. I will soon be meeting with members of the Fair Board to review programming, schedules, events, finances and ideas. We will get the Fair Book advertising ad-vertising campaign under way as soon as possible and will be requesting a number of people from each community to assist in sales. To all those purchasing advertising, please keep in mind that you will be contributing to keep the Iron County Fair one of the best in Utah. I am appreciative to the Iron County Commissioners for having expressed their confidence con-fidence in me by this appointment. ap-pointment. I. shall endeavor my best efforts to fulfill this confidence. con-fidence. I will appreciate and thank all those people that will be involved in this years Fair for the advice and assistance I will need. Sincerely yours, Art Walunas |
