Show U of U President to speak at annual C of C banquet Chancellor at the University of California at Santa Barbara in 17, at the same time launching his scholarly career with a faculty appointment in education and the publication of his widely acclaimed book, "The California Oath Controversy." In 19, Dr. Gardner was appointed ap-pointed vice chancellor-executive chancellor-executive assistant at Santa Barbara and also associate professor of higher education. In January 1971, the speaker, became vice president of the nine-campus University of California system. In becoming the University of Utah's 10th president, Dr. Gardner pledged himself to "excellence, distinction and rigor in the academic program," a vow which is reflected in the diversity of the speeches and papers he has authored in recent years. Dr. Gardner is concerned with "Politics and the Urban University," "Emerging forms of Post-Secondary Education," "Alternative Forms of Higher Education," "The Management of Conflict" "The University and Public Service," as well as many other subjects pertinent to the educational system not only of the University but of the state. Dr. David Pierpont Gardner, President of the University of Utah, will be the featured speaker at the Annual Meeting of the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce to be held Thursday, Jan. lfi, at the Town & Country Restaurant, it is announced by Keith Cripps, president. The Annual Banquet, at which newly elected officers will be named, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to the event, which is open to the public, are available at the Chamber of Commerce Offices, are through any of the board members. Assuming the presidency of the Chamber of Commerce for the 1975 year will be Max Miller, who has served as vice president and president elect during the past year. Candidates for the office of vice president and president elect for the year are Royce Chamberlain, Cedar City, Insurance In-surance agent and Frank Nichols, a representative of a Real Estate Firm. Three board members will be named. Candidates include in-clude Karl Bradshaw, Bob Brown, Van Bushnell, Lee Fife, Stan Forsyth and Dave Hohulin. Ballots have been mailed to Chamber members and results will be announced at the meeting. S. Garth Jones, Chamber Executive Secretary reminded residents that the offices are now located at the new quarters on the northwest corner of the Cedar City Municipal Park. The guest speaker, Dr. Gardner, Gard-ner, is recognized as one of the most articulate athorities of higher education in America. He became the 10th president of the U of U August 1, 1973. A native of California he graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelors degree in 1955. He returned to California to earn his MA degree in Political Science and Ph.D. degree in higher education from the University of California at Berkely.
