Show Tradition Its worth preserving Mary Gae Evans I am really a nut about traditions. I love them and I don't want anyone to try and change mine. I was so dissa-ppointed dissa-ppointed when the Fourth of July Parade was cancelled in Parowan. As long as I can remember re-member (I admit to being over ov-er 29) we have always had a parade with Uncle Sam and the Statue "of Liberty riding on a float. I guess we just ; can't get along without Bev Taylor, she usually takes charge of it. Bev was in the hospital and somehow no one else was asked. I understand there were quite a few disap. pointed kids with decorated bikes and a primary or two that had promised there little ones a ride on a float. Funny how we plan on certain things egg hunt on the church square is the place to be. You can see people you haven't seen for years, and see every, one's kids all dressed up for the occasion. One of the old traditions that was honored on the Four, th of July was when the flag was raised on Heap's Hill where the pioneers always began be-gan their Fourth celebration. The early morning sunrise salute thrilled kids all over town who were sleeping outside out-side just to be sure and hear it. The annual town meeting was held in the Third Ward with the American Legion in charge. The kid's races were held on the church lawn and nappening on our holidays and how we don't want them . changed. I think one of the hardest adjustments a young married couple has to make is whose traditions they are going to follow, his or hers. Everyone, for instance, has his own family traditions for Christ, mas a certain kind of food, ways of giving gifts, and the ceremony involved with when to get up Christmas morning. Shall they spend it at his house or hers, what kind of gifts, etc. One of my favorite traditions tradi-tions is the Christmas Eve program when mommys and : daddys, granpas and grand-, grand-, mas, children and grandchild-. grandchild-. ren go together to the Primary or Sunday School program to see the little children act out the manger scene; and then," . the awsome thrill of seeing Santa and knowing that he is In town with the toys. Thanksgiving is a hard tradition tra-dition for young couples to de-cide de-cide upon. Everyone likes tneir own family's way of cooking the turkey and has their own recipe for the dress. Ing and the things they like best. My mom, for instance makes the best chicken noodles noo-dles you've ever tasted. Whenever When-ever we hold a turkey dinner at the church we try and get Nita Wells to make the dress, ing because hers is so delic ious. Another tradition I plan on is the ringing of the bell in the Old Rock Church at midnight mid-night on New Year's Eve and on Pioneer Day. Some children wake up New Year's Day to a fresh supply of candy in a stocking as they did on Christmas. 1 like the way we celebrate Pioneer Day to honor all the wonderful people who started our traditions for us the customs cus-toms and the recipes and the ways of doing things they passed down to us. I don t know if sugar rumplings came from the English, German, Scotch, or Irish part of my family, but they are a treat we all enjoy. I think the Tri-H Easter Egg Hunt has become a fun tradition and it seems to be one of the biggest social ev. ents of the season. Everyone comes home for Easter and the the fireworks were very well done by the volunteer fire department. I am patriotic to the core and I love to see the flags flying all over town. I get a lump in my throat when I hear the Star Spangled Banner. Ban-ner. The Fourth of July serves to remind me how glad I am to be able to live here with the freedoms we enjoy and my friends and family around me. |
