Show Plane crash claims two Forest Service Fire Fighters Two fire fighters for the National Forest Service lost their lives in a plane crash in Cedar Canyon Tuesday, July 1 at approximately ap-proximately 8:30 p.m. Killed were the pilot of the converted World War II bomber, Alfred Victor Adolph, 46 of Vientinne Loas, Calif, and the copilot, co-pilot, Bob Rzigslinski, 32, of New Jersey. Iron County Sheriff Ira Schoppmann, who investigated the crash, indicated that it appeared ap-peared that the plane, enroute to dump fire repellent material on a fire near Bryce Canyon National Park, never obtained the necessary elevation to clear the mountains. The crash occured in what is known as Ashdown Gorge. More specifically the wreckage was located two miles east of the old Ashdown Sawmill. The converted con-verted B17 was one of 11 remaining since World War II. The Sheriff reports that the plane went up in flames on impact im-pact and that fires were started. Approximately 10 acres of pine were burned before the blaze was brought under control by a crew from the Dixie National Forest, who were called in to assist. Investigation as to the specific reasons for the crash is continuing con-tinuing through the Federal Aviation Agency, Sheriff Schoppmann indicated. |
