Redmen garner Second in Region tourney Three members of the Cedar High School wrestling team won the right to advance to the state finals Saturday nighl at the Region Eight tournament held at Delta. The Delta Rabbits swept the team competition in the region event with ten first place finishes and a pair of seconds sending 12 men to the state finals to be held at Wasatch High School Friday and Saturday. Delta garnered a total of 141 team points to capture the region title. In second place were the Redmen of Coach Jack Bishop with a total of 8!) points with Millard third with "(, Hurricane with 47, fourth and Dixie fifth with 31. The three Redmen who placed second and won the right to advance to the state are Evan Matheson at 132 points; Kary Laird at 120 pounds and Dan Jack at 107 pounds. Team wise the Redmen picked up eight third place finishes and a fourth to move into the second place spot. Here's how the Redmen finished in each weight: 08 - Kim Christensen, third. Kim lost to McBride of Millard in the opening round, 13-2 then tame back to defeat Reed of Hurricane 2-0. 10.") - Fayne Milner, fourth. Won opening round with a pin over White of Dixie. Lost to Clark of Delta 11-1 in second round and to Stout of Hurricane Tv2 in the final match. 112 - Mark Morrison, thrid. Morrison lost a closely contested battle to Kesler of Millard, 3-2 in the opening round. Came back to defeat Ewell of Hurricane 6-0. 119 - Ken Moss, third, was defeated in a tight battle by Quarnberg of Millard 3-2 in the opening round. Defeated Young of Hurricane 8-1. 120 - Kary Laird, second. Defeated Provost of Millard 7-2 in the opening round then lost to Gimberline of Delta 2-1 in the championship match. 132 - Evan Matheson, second. Defeated Bettridge of Hurricane 9-4 then lost by a pin to Van of Delta for the championship. 138 - Brent Goodman, third. Goodman lost to Lyman of Delta, 8-0 in the opening. Defeated Wade of Millard 2-1 then lost in the wrestle back to Hardy of Hurricane, 2-1. 145 - Scott Slack, third. Defeated Ruesch of Hurricane 6-0 6-0 in the opening round. Lost by an identical score 0-0 to Drubay of Delta in the second round and to Bundy of Dixie, 5-3, in the wrestle back for second place. 155 - Alan Moss, third, Moss lost to Shurtz of Delta, 11-3, then defeated Hughes of Dixie 9-3. 107 - Dan Jack, second. Jack lost his opening match to Barney of Delta, 19-2. Jack, however, came back to defeat Houston of Dixie 3-1 and in the wrestle back defeated Hoyt of Hurricane, 2-1. 185 - Joe Holmes, third. Lost his opening match to Stokes of Dixie by a pin. In the battle for third place he pinned I'hipps of Hurricane. Unlimited - Mark Leavitt, third. Leavitt lost a heart bleaker in the opening round to Taylor of Delta by a score of 5-4. Leavitt led the scoring through most of the match. Leavitt then came back to pin Lee of Hurricane. In the state meet the Rabbit will be an odds-on-favorite to take the stake title. Their stiffest competition is expected to come from Richfield and San Juan, according to Coach Bishop. |
