SUSC's three-day fund-raising event will begin tonight with a variety show. SUSC Students plan Fund Raising Events "Pulling together, caring together" is the theme for three March of Dimes fund-raising events which are b eing sponsored this week by Southern Utah State College students. SUSC's three-day March of Dimes drive will include a variety show Thursday evening, a commando basketball game Friday, and a marathon dance Saturday. For the past four years, SUSC students have held a March of Dimes Marathon Run between Cedar City and Salt Lake City. This year they decided to" concentrate their efforts in southern Utah. Proceeds, from the three events will be hand-carried to the televised March of Dimes Telerama Sunday in Salt Lake City. "We've lined up talent from all over southern Utah for the variety show Thursday, and several area high schools have pledged to enter the marathon dance Saturday," Jackie Riddle, spokesperson for the publicity committee, said. "The fight against birth defects is real and we need your help," the Cedar City freshman said. Shayla, Deena and Preston Maxwell, Max-well, children of Mr. and Mrs. Doug Maxwell, Cedar City, are the poster children for SUSC's fund-raising event. The three Maxwell children have Werdnig-Hoff man disease which doctors have termed "a fifteenth cousin of muscular dystrophy." Terri Matcalf, Salem, is the promitonal director of SUSC's March of Dimes efforts. Paul Brinkerhoff, Las Vegas, is in charge of the variety show. Kim Williams, Cedar City, and Gary Lasiter, owner of Ratn-miumptumms, Ratn-miumptumms, are in charge of the dance. Ken Benson, coordinator of student activities, is the advisor. The variety show will begin . Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Frank A. Thorley Recital Hall. SUSC students Marty Daniels, Cedar City, and Ben Fermon, Eagle Mountain, California, will be the emcees. Tickets for the performance will cost $6 per family or $1 per person. "The show has been planned to be a real pleasing event for families and students alike," Riddle said. The commando basketball game will begin Friday at 9 p.m. in the SUSC fieldhouse. Game rules are sparse; players wear one boxing glove, sometimes ride one another's shoulders, can foul at will and may hit below the chin and above the waist. Dave Furuta, Brighton, Colorado, is chairman of the event. Tickets will cost $1 for children and $1.50 for adults. Special half-lime activities have been planned. Disco competition will begin at noon Saturday and will continue until 9 that evening at Rammiumptumms, 600 North 100 East, Cedar City. Following the dance contest, prizes will be awarded for the best dancers for the dancers who have stayed on the floor the longest. Disco dancing for everyone will begin at 10 p.m. Southern Utah merchants have donated gift certificates and door prizes for the dance. Dance tickets will cost $2 each; refreshments will be free. "We're taking pledges for the March of Dimes at the Student Center all three days. Remember, we need your help," Riddle said. Pledges can be made by calling 586-4411, extension 215. |
