Show T-bird Debaters shine in Texas Meet Experience gained during a recent two-tournament swing into Texas is expected to be of great benefit to Southern Utah State College debaters in upcoming tournaments at the College of Eastern Utah January 20-21, 20-21, and at the University of Utah January 27-29. At El Paso Community College, SUSC debaters successfully defeated teams from Texas Tech, Odessa College, the University of Southern Colorado, the University of New Mexico, and Tulane University. "The southern US boasts some powerhouse debate programs. We felt very good defeating some of these teams," SUSC debate coach . Steve Van Dyke said. Craig LeDuc, Bingham, and Jeff Snedeger, Richfield, Rich-field, joined Dave Long, Springville, and a new squad member, Brent Reichert, to post five-one win-loss records at the El Paso Swing. Reichert, a transfer from Utah Tech College, Provo, is a freshman team member from Alpine, an American Fork High School graduate. SUSC debate efforts were hampered at the University of Texas, El Paso, by an outbreak of the flu. "In spite of chills and fevers, three of the 'four team members insisted on participating in the second tournament. Their records prevented participation in the finals, but I'm very proud of their efforts," Coach Van Dyke said. Also representing SUSC in the Texas tournaments were students competing in extemporaneous ex-temporaneous speaking, oration, dramatic interpretation in-terpretation of literature, duo acting, reader's theatre, and informative speaking. "Each year over 400 tournaments are held in the US, with nationals held in March. Forensic and debate competition must be very polished, requiring dedication on the part of students and their institutions; in-stitutions; however, the rewards of recognition and success make these educational programs tremendous tools for training citizens in the democratic processes," Van Dyke said. Scholarships are awarded each year to talented individuals in-dividuals at SUSC who are actively involved in the forensics . program.
