The initial chamber membership luncheon for 1978 was a real success, judging from the numbers who attended, at-tended, although Senator Orrin Hatch, who was scheduled to speak to the Cedar group, was unable to leave the Salt Lake City Airport. Local elected officials and various chamber officers briefed the audience assembled on problems and opportunities op-portunities that were forthcoming. Mayor Jack Sawyer and City Manager Mike Embley related the possibility of Kolob Reservoir water becoming available to Cedar City. Embley, after attending a meeting in Logan with the Board of Water Resources, said "we are closer than we have ever been to getting Kolob water." "The meeting itself was a failure for Cedar City," Embley said. "We were denied our request to put Cedar City on a project list accompanying a bonding proposal. But through the efforts of our local representatives, the Kolob project is now on the Board of Water Resource's list of priority projects." Embley said Rep. S. Garth Jones and State Senator Ivan Matheson, met with Governor Matheson and explained the need for Cedar City to obtain Kolob water. As a result, $2 million of low interest loan money may become available to Cedar, if the legislation is passed. One to two years of planning is still needed, Embley and Sawyers stated, however, before any Kolob water can be realized. Sawyers indicated a bond may be in the city's future to improve the water situation in Cedar City. "We are using about one-half our capacity now," Sawyers said. "But the problem is getting it to Cedar City. Our delivery system is old." The problem is compounded, he said, by the city's growth and the water table dropping from lack of winter water storage. Sawyers also reiterated the need for chambermeeting (continued from page 1) industries, he said, with sewer, water, power and landscaping all prepared. Land rates should also be cheaper in an Industrial Park area, he said, in order to induce light industry into trie area. "We need an industrial park to give our young people an opportunity to work at a skilled trade." Sawyers said. "It would be really a boost to our economy." Recreation is also a concern of the j city council, he added, with both I private recreation and city-owned recreation becoming real possibilities. James Hoyle reported to the group assembled the progress with the Amtrak railroad system beginning an Ogden to Los Angeles run, via Milford and Las Vegas. He said the Ogden-L.A. route would be western Amtrak's "most lucrative" run, due to Las Vegas and southern Utah's National Parks. Hearings will be held in March to get Congressional okay for the Amtrak Am-trak changes, Hoyle said. The energy crisis will have an effect on the outcome, out-come, Hoyle indicated, as trains will return to prominence because they run on coal. |
