Garrett of Cedar City has announced his candidacy candi-dacy for the position cf four-year four-year State Board cf Education post representing District 7. District 7, under the reapportionment reap-portionment inacted by the Utah Legislature, comprises Iron, Washington, Garfield, Kane, Piute, Sevier, North San. pete, South Sanpete, Juab, Tooele, Alpine, Provo City, Tintic, Millard and Beaver School districts. The candidate is an English instructor in the Cedar City Junior High School and a radio rad-io announcer for KSUB radio in Cedar City. In announcing his candidacy candi-dacy for the position, Garrett expressed the believe that the "Board needs the viewpoint of a person who is in constant contact with the students in the learning process." "Much has been said re- j ccntly about public schools providing more vocational education ed-ucation for the students. This is a good idea, but the schools should help a student learn how to live, not simply how to make a living." Garrett stated. "Schools are not simply sim-ply factories designed to turn out groups of automations trained in machine manipula-' tion," he suggested. The candidate also indicated indicat-ed that he felt that there is not an oversupply of qualified teachers. "Actually, there is an undersupply of funds. School budgets should be closely scrutinized to make sure that the money spent is done so to the best advantage, of the student. In addition, way.? of providing more money mon-ey must be found," he accert-ed. accert-ed. 'This could be done through a re-ordering of na-1 tional priorities, increase in, industry in the state rather j than a tax increase," Garrett! suggested. "People are taxed enough already," he observed. Professionally he was a-warded a-warded a National Council of Teachers of English fellowship fellow-ship to the convention in 1971. It was one of four awarded in the state. Active in community affairs he has managed a Senior Little Lit-tle League baseball team in Cedar City for the past two seasons and won two league titles.
