Show Pioneer History Presented fit DUP Meet The history of John Lee Jones, Cedar City pioneer, was reviewed by family members at a recent meeting of the Coal Creek Camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Making the presentation were sons Myron Jones, George i Jones and Willard Jones and 4 a daughter, Blanche Houch-. Houch-. en. .' John Lee Jones was born 1 in England on May 18, 1841. 1 In 1846 joined the LDS Church ! and with his family immi-' immi-' grated to the United States. ! He was baptized by his fath-! fath-! er, John Ridding Jones on 1 Julv 21. 1850 in the MississiD- pi River. After hardship and trials the family arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in 1852. Three weeks later they were asked to go south to help with the Iron industry, which they did. ', John Lee Jones helped survey sur-vey the town of Cedar City and afterward moved to what Is now known as Enoch and Went into the cattle business twith his brothers. - He also filled a mission' to i, England and the ship he was aboard hit an iceberg and tales of cotton were used to plug the gap while the ship 1 limped back to Newfoundland. Newfound-land. The pioneer taught himself many things. He was a student stu-dent of the Bible and Book of Mormon and he learned shorthand and music. He Could play the violin and entertained en-tertained along with other members of his family who were all musically inclined. His little five reed organ, first in this area, was picked up often by two sons and taken to church or to school tor dances. John Lee Jones contributed much to Enoch and Cedar City in knowledge, music and citizenship. By his first wife, Rachel Simkins Jones and second -wife, Betty Marsdeh Walker, he had 24 children, the DUP members were told.
