Show Cedar High School Redmen Stun Dixie Flyers With 65-61 Victory It was a shocker for the Flyers of Dixie and sweet victory vic-tory for the Cedar High School Redmen Friday at St. George with the Redmen capturing a 65-61 basketball victory. It was a fine team effort for the Redmen as they overcame a first half lead by the host Flyers to take the lead in the third period- In the fourth period the Red-men Red-men took the lead and held it as the Flyers cracked under the pressure of the close contest. con-test. For Coach Richard Hobbs of the Redmn it was sweet victory vic-tory for his Redmen who went into the game a decided underdog. un-derdog. It was the second league victory, both on the road for the Redmen against a single loss and for the Fly-' ers it was thffir second straight league loss after a brilliant pre season record. The Flyers came out In a four man zone with a free man covering Cedar's high scoring forward, Wayne Es-plin, Es-plin, man to man. The two teams battled to a 5-5 deadlock dead-lock before the Flyers broke away to a 13 to 5 margin and held a 15 to 8 advantage at the end of the lirst period. Brent Atkin of the Flyers got a hot hand in the seoond period to hold the Flyer advantage ad-vantage but Eric Marchant of the Rodmen and Robin Haight, both working deep in the zone broke away for a number of buckets to keep the Redmen in contention throughout the period. Marchant pushed in 10 points in the second period to lead the Redman attack. Halftime score showed the Flyers In front by a score of 31 to 26. It was the third period that the Redmen made their bid, and a successful one at that. With Just two minutes of the neriod gone the Redmen had tied the score at 33 all and the remainder of the quarter was a see-saw battle with the lead 'Changing .hands five times and was tied at 34, 38, 40 and 42 before McArthur tanked a pair of foul shots after the gun had sounded to give the Flyers a slim 43 to 42 margin at the break. As the fourth period opened open-ed Esplin of the Redmen hit a jumper to put the Redmen back in front by one, but McArthur Mc-Arthur again hit a pair of fouls to give the lead back to the hosts. Then Randy Davis, a reserve guard hit from the fi.eld Tor the Redmen for another an-other Redmen lead and Esplin hit a pair from the field to move the Rodmen out in front at 50 to 46. It was the last score for the Flyers, however, and the Redmen moved out lor the final victory on three foul shots by Esplin and a fourth by Davis. Esplin, who was held to six points in the first half, topped all scorers with 25 points. For the Redmen he was followed bv Marchant with 19 and by Haight with 12.
