Show T-Birds To Host Conference Foes year, but they Improved steadily and rapidly late in the season. Experienced Mountaineers who averaged over 10 points last season and who will play Saturday in Cedar City include guards Keith Rausch and Gerald King, forward Richard Schrah and center John Lantz. CSU has alternately had hot and cold shooting from the field in recent games. In three of the last five CSU games, the Thunderbirds have shot in the eoolish 30 per cent bracket. "Sometimes the unknown is more frightening . than the things we are familiar with" Coach Boyd Adams said as he talked about College of Southern Utah's two home conference basketball games Friday and Saturday. The Thunderbirds host Fort Lewis College Friday at 9 p.m. Saturday Western State University Uni-versity moves into town for an 8 p.m. -contest. "It's not that we are completely com-pletely in the dark about these two teams," Adams I '-:rj'' . . He will be in action against T-Birds Friday evening. . . ; ' said, "it's just that we'd like to know a lot more about them than we do." One thing the T-Birds do know Is that both schools have competitive teams this season. Both will be in the thick of the race for the di-. di-. vision .championship in the Rocky Mountain Conference. Both weekend opponents have outstanding individual performers. Fort Lewis will bring in the Mutt and Jeff combination of Don Schutz (6-7) and tiny Max Proctor (5-6). Schutz and slick Lee Walker Walk-er (6-3) give the Raiders a smooth inside attack. Walker is also a good outside shooter. Proctor is a zip-zip ball of quickness and speed. The Proctor-Skip Mead duel should be ore of the battles of the century. Last season the T-Birds and Raiders split a home and home series. The T-Birds won xt home, 86-82, but lost at Durango, Colorado, 91-77. The Raiders were probably hurt more by graduation than CSU. "We look for a tight, hard-fought, hard-fought, evenly matched game," Coach Adams said. Against Western State from Gunnison, Colo., Saturday, CSU will face a well balanced, balanc-ed, improving team. The Mountaineers managed a dis- . appointing 7-19 record last |
