Show ROLLO-glyphics country 180 years ago, with a population of three million. While we were underdevelopd, some of the now under developed devel-oped countries were then developed. de-veloped. Now that they are underdeveloped, we are becoming be-coming underdeveloped helping help-ing those underdeveloped countries become developed again. When we finally become be-come underdeveloped and the underdeveloped nations are developed, I wonder if they will come to our aid?" Poses an interesting question ques-tion doesn't it. And we think its tough in Cedar City. That's the attitude I had this past week after spending a few minutes with a former school mate Robert Hall, who operates a pharmacy in Richfield. Rich-field. While in Richfield I took an opportunity to spend just a minute with Bob while waiting for a meeting that I was attending for the Utah Press Association. The particular item that shocked me was a statement that he made concerning the availability of medical doctors in that area. He suggested for instance that there was, in comparison, a surplus in Cedar City, and he could name them off by name He named 11 including Dr. Garth Chat-terley, Chat-terley, an eye specialist in addition to ten general prac-ticioners. This pollution jag is really getting to be a problem and if you don't beleive it check with Environmental Protection Agency for the Rocky Mountain Moun-tain and Prairie Region-- that covers the states of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, North and South Dakota. A representative of the EPA indicates that cf an estimated 1,000 industries in this Region required to comply with an edict that requires application for discharge of waste water into navigable streams or tributaries, only about 400 have applied. The interesting point is that July 1 was supposed to be the deadline. Don Dubois, Acting Regional Administrator, Adminis-trator, indicates that a number num-ber of industries face injunctions injunc-tions closing down operations. It appears that it's not just a regional problem either, the EPA estimates that on a national basis only 18,000 of some 40,000 firms affected by the Permit Program had complied com-plied with the program by the July 1 deadline. He enlightened me that in the three county area of Sevier, Wayne, and Piute that there were two medical doctors in Richfield and that was the extent of those available to residents in that area. Looking at some of our own physicians in Cedar City and the tremenous pace that they are keeping despite the fact that there are 11 of them, and comparing that t0 what kind of case load the two doctors in Richfield might have, made me shutter. What is happening, to a certain extent is that residents resi-dents in Wayne and Piute counties, for instance, are no longer going to Richfield for medical services but are looking look-ing elsewhere and as Hall pointed out they are not only taking with them money that that would be spent for medical purposes but money for other commodities as well. So Cedar City with 11 medical med-ical doctors must, in comparison, com-parison, provide further economic eco-nomic benefits to the community. com-munity. The real problem, however, is what is to become of those people in isolated areas who need medical attention. When a community as progressive of Richfield and as a centrally located in relationship to other sparsely propulated. counties can only attract two doctors it must mean that there is a real crisis at hand. Now hear a tonpue twister that was picked up from the Ccmstock, Nebr., News. I quoter "As I understand it, we were an underdeveloped |
