Russell Shirts, Christine Hunt win SUSC Pestalozzi award Russell B. Shirts, Cedar City, and Christine - Hunt, Ivins, Washington County, are recipients recip-ients at the 1972 Heinrich Pestalozzi awards, given annually an-nually by the Southern Utah State College School of Education Edu-cation to outstanding graduates gradu-ates in secondary and elementary elem-entary education. Mr. Shirts, who will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education at SU SC Commencement exercises June 2, has been named as the top candidate in the SUSC secondary education program. He is listed on the High Honor Hon-or Roll in the commencement program. While at SUSC he has par-tlcipated par-tlcipated in football, basketball, basket-ball, and track, and was assistant as-sistant freshman 'football coach in 1970-71. He has also been active in Circle K Club and LDSSA. He served a two-year two-year mission to Western Canada. Can-ada. Mr. Shirts is married to the former Marilyn Stowell of Nephi. His parents are Dr. and Mrs. Morris A. Shirts, Cedar Ce-dar City. He will teach at Duchesne High School next year. Miss Hunt is also, a High Honor Roll student She received re-ceived the Pestalozzi award for her work in elementary education. She completed course work at SUSC last summer and is currently teaching on the Navajo Indian In-dian Reservation at Kayenta, Ariz. She attended Dixie Junior College before transferring to SUSC as a junior. She served as Spanish Club vice president presi-dent at SUSC and has been active in German . language j studies, folksinglng, and pep club. She is an active member mem-ber of the LDS Church, having hav-ing filled positions as secretary secre-tary and assistant librarian in the Sunday School organization. organiza-tion. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Andrew D. Hunt, Ivins. Other secondary education majors who will receive recognition rec-ognition as outstanding teacher teach-er candidates are, Lee M. Abraham, Ab-raham, St. George, Industrial Arts; Sandra Barney, Richfield, Richfi-eld, English; Stefinee Esplin, St. George, English; Terry H. Patten, Circleville, Physical Education; and Doyle B. Whitehead, New Harmony, Mathematics. Elementary education majors maj-ors receiving special recognition recogni-tion are Penny Bauer, Central, Washington County; Gail Foremaster, Cedar City; Ruth Ann Hoff, Cedar City; Virginia Virgin-ia Samuels, Cedar City, and Kathy Zingelman, Circleville. |
