Show Flying Lessons Pay Off for Ray Juvelin Family Because a long, hot trip by car seemed distasteful to his wife, Loraine, Ray Juvelin of Cedar City decided last April 8 to take flying lessons in order or-der to transport his family to Houston, Texas, for the Ki-wanis Ki-wanis International Convention. Conven-tion. Ray is president of the local Kiwanis Club. Spurred on by the progress he was making under the able instruction of Art Wells, Cedar Ce-dar City Airport Manager, Ray and Loraine decided to expand ex-pand their plans to include a trip to the East Coast. " Two months later, Ray had his license and sixty hours flying time. On June 24, with their daughter, Shan, the couple took off in a Piper Cherokee 180 leased from Bob Ray, St. George Airport Manager. Man-ager. They returned on July 14 with memories of one of the most interesting vacations they have had. Their stops on the way included in-cluded Houston, Memphis and Washington, D. C, by airplane. air-plane. Because of poor visibility vis-ibility on the Eastern Seaboard Sea-board due to : very bad air pollution, they decided to visit vis-it New York and the New England area by car. While in Washington, D. C, Ardith Ahlstrom, secretary to Congressman Sherman Lloyd and former Cedar City resident, res-ident, conducted them on a whirlwind tour of the many historical sites. They report that Ardith gave them the royal treatment. Anyone planning plan-ning to visit Washington, D. C, they say, should drop a line to Ardith for help on reservations and tours. The New England tour was the most scenic, New Ham-shire Ham-shire being the most breath -takingly beautiful. They were also impressed with the beautiful beau-tiful turnpikes and parkways throughout the East. These highways are completely landscaped land-scaped and free of commercial advertising. Unlike our "freeways," "free-ways," however, a toll is collected col-lected from the traveler for the privilege of using the highway. The New York City visit included in-cluded all the usual tourist stops, including a Manhattan Island boat trip, a visit to Rockefeller Center, NBC, Radio Ra-dio City Music Hall with its famous Rockettes, the United Nations building, Lincoln Performing Per-forming Arts Center, Greenwich Green-wich Village, as well as various var-ious art galleries. |
