The tournament was a credit to the community as a result of their efforts. mi Springville Pony League All-Stars All-Stars walked off with the championship of the southern Utah tournament staged in Ce-dar Ce-dar City last week end. The host Cedar City club was elminated after two rounds of play and Carbon, aftor losing the opening game to Provo, battled back into contention con-tention ' and met Springville for the championship. Springville, after falling behind be-hind 7 to 1, got their big bats going, pounded out four home runs and wound up with a decisive de-cisive 13 to 7 victory over Carbon Car-bon for the eventual championship. champ-ionship. In the opening round of play Springville defeated Cedar City Ci-ty by a score of 4 to 3 in an extra inning affair. It was one of the most unusual games of record in this area. Nolan Roberts Ro-berts on the mound for Cedar City, collected 18 strikeouts in seven innings of play, gave up a single hit but left the mound at the end of the frame with a tie score of 3-all. In the eighth inning, the win-ning win-ning run for Springville came on to score on an error after getting on base by being hit with a pitched ball. Cedar on the other hand had nine hits in the game. Provo and Springville met in the early evening as first round winners and Springville took advantage of errors again to chalk up a 4 to 3 win and remain undefeated. Three runs were scored in the fifth inning by Springville on a single hit and three errors and it was enough to overcome a previous 3 to 1 advantage held by Provo. Carbon and Provo were then matched as teams with single losses and Carbon came out scrapping and won the contest 2 to 1. Ellington of Carbon singled in the third frame and scored on a double by Bene to |
