Show Parowan City's New Library Dedicated Sunday Parowan City's new public li brary was officially dedicated on Sunday evening with a program which began at 6:30. The small auditorium which is a part ol the building, was filled to capacity ca-pacity with residents of this city ci-ty and guests from surrounding communities, particularly Cedar City, attending to witness the ceremonies. Howard Joseph, a member o the library board and former mayor of Parowan City, presided at the meeting and the dedica-' dedica-' tory prayer was offered by Howard How-ard D. Knight, Parowan Stake president. Osmer K. Nielsen, retiring re-tiring mayor of the city, presented present-ed the building to the city, and in doing so read a very interesting interest-ing history of the old library building, which was found in the cornerstone of that building when it was razed following the completion of the new building. Mayor Ralph S. Orton accepted the building in behalf of the citizens of Parowan. Short reports were made by board members, Mrs. Marguerite Orton, Mrs. Jean Hendrickson, Mrs. Florence S. Mitchell and Chester Benson. W. Clair Rowley gave a brief review of the part Iron County played in helping the city to finance the building. The Parowan High School girls' double trio, consisting of Annette An-nette Stubbs, Cherrie Holyoak, Kathy Mitchell, Kathy Rowley, Brenda Chamberlain and Diana Orton, sang "Bless This House," and County Commissioner Norman Nor-man Day pronounced the benediction. bene-diction. Those present were then invited invit-ed to inspect the new building and its facilities. In addition to the history mentioned men-tioned above, the old library cornerstone contained typewritten typewrit-ten sheets carrying names of several hundred contributors to the building. The original library li-brary was constructed mostly jwith a grant from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation. The amount of the contributions contribu-tions ranged from a minimum of five cents to a high of $5.00 with only three persons listed in the above category The list is very interesting and contains the names of many of the older residents res-idents of the city at that time, as well as the names of many residents resi-dents who are now getting rather rath-er old. |
