The building reserves are to be used for financing of the new South Elementary School in Cedar City and a new Elementary School in Parowan, but will be invested in bonds until needed. First Security and State Bank of Southern Utah in Cedar City, and the Bank of Iron County In Parowan. Agreement on the transfer of property between the school dis-trict dis-trict and William R. The historian has available much information on early education in the county and will do consid-erable consid-erable additional research in connection with the school contract. Iron County School Building Needs j Raise Future Financing Problem The Iron County School Board, faced with urgent need for more and more school building space, has decided that it should present pre-sent the problem to the citizens of the district in a scries of public pub-lic hearings to determine the wishes of the people in financing financ-ing such a program. Although extensive building has been undertaken in the district dis-trict during the past few years it has been possible to finance the entire program on a "payj as you go" basis, and no bonding' , or other indebtedness has been necessary. The district is also in a position to finance two other! contemplated buildings, a South Elementary School in Cedar City and an Elementary School in Parowan, on the same basis. These will be undertaken In 195.-. and 1959, and will be paid for when completed. Bids will be called for on the Cedar school early in Jamiar wlth construction scheduled to start In the early spring. However, .the school board I faced with an urgent need t provide much additional spacr at the Cedar City High School and to do considerable rcmodc" ing of the school plant at Paro wan ta properly utilize the plan' I by the high school after the rev-elementary rev-elementary school Is erected. Th- I problem at the Cedar City Hlg' School Js becoming Increasln;-'-urgent, and should be solve; I the next two years to provlrt.' 'for expected increased enroll ment. . . The problem the board Is coi- 1 fronted with is whether to waV. until 1960 or 1961 to expand UV high school, In order to flnane the project without bonding, oj whether It would be better tc ' Issue short term bonds to expanr" the school before the space need-become need-become more urgent It seems, that cost would be met In about the same period of time, but interest in-terest rou would be added If banding is undertaken. The question ques-tion is one of whether It would be better to pay the Interest costs and add the facilities before the situation becomes critical, or to save the interest and struggle along with 'inadequate facilities for three or four years longer. Another question confronts the education board. The Junior high school must also be expanded and there is a possibility that it may be advisable to build a complete new high school and campus, and use the present facilities fa-cilities for the Junior high school alone. These problems will be submitted sub-mitted to the people for consideration consid-eration at public hearings to be announced in the near future. |
