ELAINE SOUTHWICl local teacher and currently a member of the College of Southern South-ern Utah staff, has article on 'Value of Poetry' accepted for publication 1 n church magazine. 1-7- V ) ' ; ! -U( r' W Elaine Southwick Publishes Poetry Article Mrs. Southwick, currently teaching In the English department depart-ment at College of Southern Utah, has been an active writer writ-er and an authority on poetry, drama and speech. Acceptance of an article written writ-ten by Mrs. Elaine Southwick titled ti-tled 'The VaJue of Poetry," has been made known by the associate associ-ate editor of the Relief Society Magazine, a monthly publication of the L D S Church. The article that Mrs. Southwick South-wick wrote defines poetry and tells of its background. She stressed the Important part that poetry plays for Individuals who have been eminent In history. "For no two people will poetry poe-try mean quite the same thing, because each must Interpret it according to his own experiences and tastes," she wrote. "Poetry is the reQectlon of childhood. It Jumps and skips, soars and flies, laughs and grieves, discovers and treasures." In her article Mrs. Southwick noted that, the community In general, does not utilize the persuasive per-suasive power of poetry as it should. She cited the number of times library poetry books were signed out. "These books are no doubt usea mucn more xor reierence work or an occasional moment of enjoyment, but their Intrinsic worth lies buried and unmined by youth and age alike," she wrote. Mrs. Southwick taught school for 13 years In the Cedar City Junior High and Senior High schools. She taught speech, dramatics dra-matics and music. Previously she has written songs, one of which was recorded. In 1939 Mrs. Southwick South-wick wrote and produced an opera op-era for the school. Six poems composed by her have been published pub-lished in various magazines that Include ChUdren's Friend. Deser-et Deser-et News, U Parade and Utah Sings. Mrs. Southwick has taught children's literature, creative writing and basic communications communica-tions this year. |
