Show Last Rites Accorded Owen Mathescn, 79 Funeral services were conducted conduct-ed at the Enoch Ward Chapel Tuesday afternoon for Owen Matheson, 79, who died at the home of his daughter in Cedar City Friday, Oct. 13, of a coronary coron-ary occlusion. Throughout his life he has been an active civic and church worker who was associated with many firsts in Iron County. He spent most of his life as a farmer farm-er and livestockman. The operation of the first power pow-er plant for Cedar City was under un-der his direction; he was one of the first to use heavy equipment in the clearing of land in an effort ef-fort to extend farming operations opera-tions in Iron County, and he had during his lifetime drilled many wells in Cedar City and Paro-wan. Paro-wan. In the Enoch Ward he had served as bishop for 17 years. Following his retirement he continued his work with power operating a power plant at Bryce Canyon for the Utah Parks Company. Com-pany. He was born Sept. 24, 1882, a son of Alexander and Lydia Evans Matheson. He married Sarah Elizabeth Weber, Nov. 29, 1904 in the St. George LDS Temple. Tem-ple. She died June 25, 1961. . Survivors include sons and daughters, Francis W., Firth, Idaho; Barnard W., Salt Lake City: O. Evan, LaMar W., Ivan M., Mrs. Olive Maxwell and Mrs. Amelia Daly, all of Cedar City; Mrs. Grace Holyoak, and Mrs. Lovina Adams, Pa rowan; Mrs. Alice Halterman, West Covin a, Calif.; 49 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. The funeral services were conducted con-ducted by Bishop Henry Grim-shaw. Grim-shaw. Speakers were Warren Bulloch, Peter Gurr, Dr. J. S. Prestwich and Barbara Adams, Prayers were by J. Urie Williams and John Heaton. George D. Grimshaw and El-win El-win Armstrong sang "Cast Thy Bread Upon the Water"; Tlaine Nelson sang "Oh, My Father", and "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine," was sung by Florene Sherratt, and a double mixed quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. Clair Rowley, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ward, Mrs. Shirley JVini Ray I.yman. Rishon Heber Gurr and Mrs. Dee Robinson sang "Going Home." with Mary Lyman at the piano. Prelude and postlude music was by Sandra Maxwell. Accompanists Accom-panists were Maurine Grimshaw and Shirley Jones. The dedicatory prayer was by Mack Matheson. |
