Show I Chemicals Aid in Cntrol of Noxious Weeds Modern chemicals (herbicides) have been developed for controlling con-trolling specific weeds in the gardens, fields and lawns.' Many of these work best when applied in the fall, reminds Wallace Sjo-blom, Sjo-blom, county extension agent with Utah State University. If you have been bothered by broad-leafed weeds, such as dandelions dan-delions and plantlan, you can spray them anytime before their leaves turn frown from frost Mix two tablespoons of 2-4-D per gallon gal-lon of water and spray on until the foliage Is wet. These perennial peren-nial weeds are killed by the chemical being carried through the leaves down into the roots. Crabgrass and other such gras-s gras-s weeds can be controlled by using us-ing arsenical compounds. Some of them, such as Pax Crabgrass Killer, are recommended as fall treatment to be applied anytime before the soil freezes. These chemicals remain near the surface sur-face of the soil and kill the new weed seedlings as they germinate germin-ate next spring. Fall treatment is often quite effective ef-fective In controlling small spots of creeping perennial weeds in the gardens, fields, ditch banks, fence rows and other places. It is important to kill them before they spread and become more serious. Benzoic acid Is effective In controlling con-trolling the deep-rooted, broad-leafed broad-leafed weeds such as morning glory, white tap, Canadian thistle this-tle and Russian knapweed. Liquid Li-quid forms of it are sold as Ben-zac Ben-zac and Trysben. The granular form is Benzabor. For effective results, apply the liquids at one cupful of chemical plus one gallon gal-lon of water per square rod. If you use the granular form, apply one and one-half pounds per square rod. Shallow rooted weeds, such as quackgrass, are readily control-led control-led with Monuron applied at the rate of -lb. per square rod, or ' Atrazine applied at the rate of to lb. per square rod. These chemicals are soil stcrllants. They prevent plant growth for several years. They are particularly particu-larly useful in keeping ditches free from weeds and in keeping ground bare In yards and other places where no plant growth is wanted, the county agent said. |
