Show Patrolman Indicates Improved Area Traffic Picture Robert Reld, district sergeant in charge of the southern Utah District of the Utah Highway Pa-trol, Pa-trol, reported this week in a year-end report the that accident picture for this area was down during 1959 from 1958. Report indicated that less personal per-sonal Injury accidents were recorded re-corded on highways of tho southern south-ern Utah area although traffic flow was up some six percent over 1958. The southern Utah district covered cov-ered In the report includes the three county area of Iron, Washington Wash-ington and Kane counties. In ad-dition ad-dition to Reld the unit includes five other troopers: EIRoy Mason, Cedar City; Gordon Famsworth, Parowan; Julian Fox, St. George; Merrill Johnson, Kanab and Norman Nor-man Anderson, Orderville. During the fiscal year of 1959 the six members of the Highway unit patroled 222,9-10 miles. A total of 2598 driver violations were ticketed and the three counties coun-ties of the district received a total to-tal of $18,371 collected from fines. All fines levied on the issuance of tickets by the Highway Patrol are retained bv the counties. Reid stated. During the year a total of 226 accidents were Investigated with-in with-in the district which Included 12 fatalities; 67 personal injuries and 147 property damage. Radar units were put into use throughout the three counties 83 times during the year; 60 blockades block-ades were established, 33 auto-mobiles auto-mobiles were impounded and 49 warrants on driver's license and financial responsibility pickups were handled. Throughout the year Troopers gave 41 safety lectures and 12 In-training In-training schools were conducted with one or more troopers represented. repre-sented. Report Indicated a total of 146 special details throughout the year including such things as school bus inspections, safety Inspections, In-spections, garage inspections, convoys, blood details, etc. Six men of the district performed per-formed a total of 1653 overtime over-time hours without compensation compensa-tion during the year, Reid stated. Reid credited the general public pub-lic with the reduction in personal Injuries on the highways during the year. He stated that public observance of the rules and regulations re-gulations on the highways is responsible re-sponsible for the better traffic picture even though an Incrase in highway travel was recorded during the 1959 year. |
