Show Local Political Parties Take Action on Municipal Elections Republican Party Makes City Office Nominations The Republican Party of Cedar City in regular nominating convention con-vention Tuesday night named three candidates for election to the position of councilman. Nominated were Grant Seeg-millcr, Seeg-millcr, lumber and building supply sup-ply firm manager; Sam Gentry, milk distributor, and Fred Slack, , employee of the Southern Utah Power Company. Investigation Wednesday by Mr. Slack revealed that state statutes prohibit him from holding an office in the city administration, and he therefore has submitted his resignation. The vacancy wiU be filled by appointment ap-pointment by the Republican committee. Statute Quoted Section 17, Article XII of the 1 constitution of the State of Utah provides that "no officer, employee, em-ployee, attorney, or agent of any corporation, company or association associa-tion doing business under, or by virtue of any municipal charter or franchise, shall be eligible to or be permitted to hold any municipal mu-nicipal office, In the municipality granting such charter or franchise." fran-chise." Thus since Mr. Slack Is an employee of the Southern Utah Power Company, which op-erates op-erates under a franchise from Ce. dar City Corporation, would not be permitted to hold office as a city councilman. Action on his resignation has not yet been taken by the party. The other two have accepted the nomination, it Is understood, and will seek election on Nov. 8. Mr. SeegmiUer was nominated for re-election to the council. He Is now filling the un-explred term of M. F. Grames, deceased. The other two councllmen whose terms expire on Dec. 31 are WI1-lard WI1-lard Lunt and Ketlh Smith. New Officers The Republican City Commit, tee was also re-organized at the meeting Tuesday, with Eldon Schmutz elected chairman, Ellen Slmklns, vice chairman, and Lor-In Lor-In Hlrschl, secretary. Schmutz succeeds Grant SeegmiUer, Mrs. Simklns succeeds Lijlis Larson and Hlrschl succeeds Iva Jones. A resolution was adopted at the meeting setting up a central activity and policy committee, to bo comoosed of the three newlv elected party officials and the chairman of each voting district. Members of the city council whose terms do not expire are Marvin Jones and Gwen Beal. Their terms will expire In 1957 at the same time as the term of Mayor Arnold Anderson. The office of-fice of treasurer, formerly filled by election, now becomes an appointive ap-pointive office. Currently the position po-sition is hejd by Zelma Glass. To date no opposition candidates candi-dates have been nominted for the municipal offices. However, the deadline for placing candidates in nomination is' Thursday, Oct. 22, so opposition to the Republican Republi-can ticket may yet develop. |
