Show Cedar Junior High School Guidance Program Desiped to Help Students (By Donald For A, Counselor) I An organized guidance program pro-gram was established in the Cedar Ce-dar Junior High about four years ago. Establishment of this program pro-gram followed a trend throughout through-out the state and nation as educators edu-cators began to see the great need for this important work, The definition of guidance which we have attempted to follow fol-low in the junior high was stated by Arthur J. Jones. He said: "Guidance involves personal help given by tomeone; it is designed de-signed to assist a person to decide de-cide where he wants to go, what he wants to do, or how he can best accomplish his purpose; it assists him to solve problems that arise in his life. It doe.; not solve problems for the individual indi-vidual but helps him to solve them." I believe the need for this type of direction is plain to everyone. Our students today are faced with a bewildering array of de-1 clsions, in personal adjustments, vocational and educational choices. The 60 man commission that made a study of education in Utah recommended a great increase in-crease in guidance services offered of-fered to the students of the state. In our program we have attempted at-tempted to counsel student; on personal problems, to help them in the social relationships. We have tried to help them in a physical way wherever possible. possi-ble. Each year we have checked the sight and hearing of many students and recommended to the parents those who needed help. We have appreciated the help .of the Lions Club in this project. It has given the school an excellent machine which makes possible a much more accurate ac-curate check. We would like very much to have the parents assist us in finding students who need help. In a vocational way we are using us-ing a plan sheet v ilh each ninth grade stud?nt, in which he or she plans a high school course to best fit nis .r her vocational choice. We attempt to help them in making a wise choice by given them occupational information, and attempting to help them discover dis-cover their strength and weaknesses. weak-nesses. We would like to enlist th. help of the parents in our guidance guid-ance program. They could do a great deal by encouraging students stu-dents to come for help, and giving giv-ing us information on problems bothering their boy or girl. Parents Par-ents are always welcome in our school and we would like to have you come and look over our guidance guid-ance program. |
