Show Tfi School News I By Hems Feig Six Cedar City high school journalism staff members attended at-tended the annual invitational Journalism Convention held Oct. 31 at the Brigham Young University Univer-sity In Provo. ' The students, Dee El Stapley, paper editor; Mary Jane Dalley, assistant editor; Kaye Watson, art editor; Dora Jayne Barlow, paper staff member; Claudine Cowan, yearbook editor, and Va-lene Va-lene Adams, yearbook assistant editor, traveled to the convention conven-tion to gain knowledge for a betterment bet-terment of the paper and year book. Miss La June Bogh, Eng- j lish instructor at the high school, accompanied the six students.- Bill Smart, editorial writer for the Deseret News and Telegram, was the keynote speaker. He talked on the topic of "Our Job and Yours." He stressed the must of keeping records of the paper's activities and he quoted Thomas Jefferson's words "Freedom of a nation depends on freedom of a newspaper." Each member of the Cedar City party attended a different meeting meet-ing on Saturday morning and gained valuable knowledge on the subject that was discussed. The students found new ways to improve a mimeographed paper pa-per which they hoped they could use in future publications. In the afternoon panel discussion, which the Cedar City party attended, at-tended, the speakers stressed the importance of copy-reading, headlines and the planning of pages and columns. The six staff members returned Sunday night from the important convention. Janet Wasden, student body vice president at Cedar City high school, along with three other Iron Countv students, traveled to Salt Lake City Saturday, Oct. 31, to attend the Junior Red Cross Regional Confrerence held annually. an-nually. The reason for the conference was to get news and interesting ideas about a local Junior Heel Cross chapter. Saturday morning the representative repre-sentative attended the welcoming welcom-ing address and elementary meetings. In the afternoon, the students separated to different rooms to hear talks by Junior Red Cross authorities. Tus party returned Sunday night with valuable knowledge to be used in the future. Basketball intramural activities activi-ties for the sophomore students will begin Monday, Nov. 9, at Cedar City high school, according to Coach Englestead. Additional intramural basketball will depend de-pend on the outcome of the Cedar-Dixie play-off today. At thA regular meeting of ihe student council Tuesday, a plan was proposed to adopt a permanent perman-ent Indian head to be used as a school insignia. The members of the council will next debate the question of whether a comic or serious face should be adopted for this purpose. |
