Show Iron County Tax Levy Unchanged Barring State School Assessment If the state assesses a tax levy for state school purposes this year taxpayers of Iron County will have an increase in total tax levy practically equal to whatever the state sets for school purposes. This situation is created crea-ted by the fact that the local school levy this year will be exactly ex-actly what the total local and state levy was last year, or 22.75 mills, and the Cedar City levy-will levy-will be the same as last year, with only a slight decrease made in the county levy. The Increased school levy will be made despite a 14 per cent rise in valuation or property In Iron County. However, the schools will actually receive less money on which to operate during the coming year, in spite of the increased in-creased valuation and the increased in-creased levy. This is the result of the new school tax laws adopted by the legislature this year. Iron County received about $125,000 from the state equalization fund last year, and this year instead of receiving funds the district will pay Into the state equalization equaliza-tion fund between $60,000 and $80,000. Uniform School Tax Under the new school taxing law each district must assess a 12 mill levy for the uniform school program, whereas the lo-jcal lo-jcal school district assessed 5.30 mills for this purpose last year. However, the district assessed 7 mills In excess of minimum last year, but reduced this to 5 mills this year. A reduction was also made this year in the levy for capital outlay or the reserve building fund. This was reduced from 6.10 mills to 5 mills. Two other levies .5 of a mill for sinking sink-ing fund and 25 of a mill for recreation, rec-reation, remain the same. This gives a total of 22.75 mills this year as compared with a total levy of 19.15 mills levied last year. The state levied 3.06 mills for school purposes last year, and although the state levy for this year has not yet been set It has been lndlcatel that an equivalent, equiva-lent, or even higher levy may be set this year, - ' Slight becreaie '- The Iron County levy has been dropped from 7.05-mills to 650 mills lor this year. The decrease was , made possible by reductions in the county roads and county indigent fund levies. These were partially .offset by an Increase In the general fund levy. The general ; fund levy was raised from 2.45 mills to 2.60 mills while the roads lev was dropped from 1.80 mills to 1.20 mills, and the Indigent fund was dropped frcm .50 of a mill to .40 of a mill. Levies for all other county funds remain the same, including county hospital, 1 mill; county library, I mill; airport, .10 of a mill, and recreation, .20 of a mill. The Cedar City tax levy total will remain the same as last year, 23.6 mills.- However, there will probably be some slight changes in the amounts levied for some of the funds. |
