Show Idaho School Music Head Chosen To Replace A. B. Larson in H S Bands Eugene Holland, native of Milwaukee, Mil-waukee, Wis., this week signed a contract with the Iron County school district to teach instrumental instru-mental music in the Cedar City s junior and senior high schools. He will succeed A. B. Larson as director of bands in the twoi schools. Mr. Larson, who has directed hands and orchestras at the Ce- j dar City schools for the past 15 years, recenty resigned to accept ac-cept a position at the Las Vegas High School. Mr. Holland, who is 27 years of age, comes to the Cedar City school system from Grace, Idaho, where he has been director of band, orchestra and chorus in the Grace High School for the past throe years. Although he has been director of all music groups as head of the music department depart-ment of the Idaho school, Mr. Holland's interest and training is primarily in band work, he reports. While at the Grace school his band was given a No. 1 rating, the only school in the district to gain the top rating. I School Record Mr. Holland attended the El-mira El-mira High School at Elmira, Wis., for three years and grad-'uatcd grad-'uatcd from Central High School at Mason City, Iowa. He then attended Milton College, Milton, Wis. After serving with the Marines Mar-ines during World War II, during which time he met and married ja Utah girl, he came west, and for three years taught in Idaho on an emergency teaching certi-'licate. certi-'licate. Later he entered the Uni-Iversity Uni-Iversity of Utah where he received re-ceived his B. S. degree in 1951. While at the University of Utah he served as assistant band director di-rector to Ronald D. Gregory. After receiving his degree he accepted the position at Grace and has remained there since. The new band director plays the saxophone and clarinet, and has played with professional groups on several occasions. Starts in September Mr. Holland will assume his duties at the Cedar City schools at the opening of school in September. Sep-tember. However, he plans to spend some time in Cedar this ! summer, working with Mr. Larson Lar-son and Prof. Roy L. Halversen, in order to become acquainted with the music program developed devel-oped by these two men. It is understood that the same arrangement for the exchange of , instructors betwen the high school and the College of Southern South-ern Utah, as has been in effect during the past two years, will ! be continued. Under this arrangement, arrange-ment, while Prof. Halversen is a full time employee of the college col-lege and the band leader is a full time employee of the school J district. The two leaders exchange ex-change teaching time, with Prof. Halversen directing all of the orchestra or-chestra groups and the Cedar bind leader all of the bands. |
