Show f W Iron Mines Team Defeats St. George 18-8 For Southern Utah Soitball Title The Columbia Iron Mines soft-tall soft-tall team walked off with top honors In the annual Southern Utah Softball tournament at Cedar Ce-dar City last week end. overcoming overcom-ing the toughest competition that could be offered to the strongest teams In Southern Utah and Nevada. Ne-vada. The Mines team, with veteran crk Nelson on the mound, turned turn-ed back a game but weary team from St. Geore in the champion-thip champion-thip battle to win by a score of 18 to 8, and walk off with a beautiful championship trophy. The St. George team, managed by Ronald MacArthur, battled gamely, but had had so worn themselves out in the semi-final game aganst the Ford Motor team from Ploche, that they could not cope with the power and smoothness of the Mines ag-gtegation. ag-gtegation. The game efforts of the Dixie players, won for them the sportsmanship award. The Mines team opened its bid for the tournament championship champion-ship with a hard-earned victory over Caliente, Nevada, by a score ot 5 to 2, and moved ahead in the second night with a 7 to 6 victory over Enterprise. The local j squad came within one out of being eliminated from the meet by the Enterprise team, but an error on a fly ball turned almost certain defeat Into victory. The Mines team was trailing 5 to 6 when they came to bat for the last time, then with two down pud two on it looked like the cause was lost when Gail Woodbury Wood-bury lofted a high fly to left field, but the Enterprise player let the ball drop from his mit and the- local team was still in the championship race. With three teams left in the running the Columbia Iron Mines drew a bye for the first game on the final night, and sat back to watch St. George and Ploche maul each other for seven innings, in-nings, before the Dixie team won 17 to 15. St. George won its way into the finals with an easy 19 to 7 first night victory over Bradshaw Chevrolet, and a tough 7 to 6 vie-tory vie-tory over Zion National Park on the second night. Ploche trimmed the Iron County Coun-ty Record, Cedar City champions. i to 4, in the opening game of the tournament, and then sneaked sneak-ed past a game Bradshaw Firestone Fire-stone team 7 to 3, before losing to St. George. The Bradshaw kids had won from the Utah Construction Construc-tion team 9 to 7 In an extra taring ta-ring battle the first night. The I young team gained honorable mention for their sportsmanship. I Darwin Woodbury catcher on the Mines team, wno played brilliantly bril-liantly throughout the tournament, tourna-ment, both on defense and offense, of-fense, was the unanimous choice for the outstanding player award, most coveted award of the entire meet. He received a wrist watch contributed by W. F. Mullett, in recognition of his achievement. Gordon Lytle, Pioche pitcher, was named the outstanding pitcher of the tournament and was presented with a sweater as an award. Huge crowds gathered for each night's games, marking the tournament as one of the most ropular athletic events in this part of the state. |
