Show Pays Big Dividends A combination of unusual leadership on the part of the director, indomitable spirit on the part of band members, and whole-hearted cooperation on the part of townspeople townspeo-ple and parents, paid big dividends to the Cedar City high school and to Cedar City this week when the high school band won top honors in a three state contest at the University Univer-sity of Utah. The band students, taking advantage of the UEA convention con-vention holiday to accept the University invitation without with-out missing any school, worked long and hard in preparation prepara-tion for the big event. They practiced three hours a day from the time they accepted the invitation until they left for Salt Lake City, using their own time for the practice sessions. They went to school an hour early each morning, marched during the noon hour and then stayed for an hour after school to continue practicing. In addition they staged a dance as a means of raising funds with which to pay for gas and oil for the buses used, and to pay the drivers of the buses for their time and expenses. ex-penses. The school furnished the buses but the students had to stand all expenses. They paid their own expenses while on the trip, including meals and rooms. Director A. B. Larson provided the leadership and direction di-rection so necessary to bring a group of students to a standard of perfection in performance, both in inarching iind playing. His ability, as proved time and time again in competition throughout the west, once again brought the Cedar students to the peak of excellent performance. Support and cooperation from parents and townspeople, so necessary on an undertaking of this kind, was never in doubt. Parents willingly accepted the inconvenience of having their children go early and stay late at school. They also gave enthusiastic approval of the undertaking, and willingly met the financial responsibility of paying the expenses of their children. The leadership, spirit, wbrk, and cooperation made participation par-ticipation possible, and although the job was a big one the results paid everyone well for their efforts. |
