Show Cedar City Man In Okinawa Naval Battle Douglas Manning, husband of Mrs. Olga Manning of Cedar City, a crew member of the U. S. Destroyer Hadley, participated in a sensational sensation-al battle of( the shores of Okinawa on May 11th. according to a news dispatch nA May 31st., which described des-cribed the' action as follows: "Shortley before 8 o'clock on the morning of May 11th. a low flying sea plane attempted a suicide attack at-tack on the Hadley. The plane was shot down, but soon after several formations of enemv Dlanes totaling 150 in all, were reported to the North. They were Immediately attacked at-tacked by our fighters, but many of them broke through and attacked attack-ed the Hadley and Evans for the next hour and a half. The two dw-troyers, dw-troyers, maneuvering at high speed and firing all guns were under continuous con-tinuous attacks by these saddle planes. Between the two destroyers forty-two planes were shot down, with the Hadley getting twenty-1 two of them. Meanwhile the Amerl-1 can fighters ran out of ammunition but forced the Japs into the water I by flying over their planes. Both destroyers were damaged, but neither neit-her was sunk."
