Show Announce Program Honoring Utah's 50th Anniversary The Golden Anniversary of Utah's statehood wiU be duly observed by Utah citizens January 4. 1946. Special Spec-ial program commoratlng the state's entrance Into the Union will be held In all Utah schools and Universities Uni-versities and at 8.00 o'clock p. m. In Salt Lake City, the day's events will be climaxed by a public meeting in the L. D. S. Tabernacle where Senator Abe Murdock will deliver a special message from President Harry S. Truman. Dr. E. E. Monson, Secretary of State, and chairman of the general committee In charge of the fiftieth ! anniversary oDservance throughout Utah Is distributing 50.000 souvenir programs to Utah schools. The programs will be given to all students stu-dents and parents attending special spec-ial anniversary "Utah Citizenship" assemblies now being arranged by school officials for January 4. The souvenir programs will carry the a brief historical sketch, the names of the first state officers and the preamble to the state constitution, names of the six surviving signers of the Utah constitution who will be In attendance at the Taber-nalc Taber-nalc exercises. Utah was the forty-fifth state to Join the Union, and a new star was added to the constellation of the national flag. When the news reached Utah fifty years ajo January 4, that Utah had been admitted to the union, guns were fired, whistles blown and bells set to ringing. Celebration;1 were held and general rejoicing was , the order of the day. I Two days later, on January 6. Inaugural In-augural ceremonies for the newly elected state officers took place In the Salt Lake Tabernacle. The building was beautifully decointM with a huge flag, 132 feet lonu nn1 78 feet wide, suspended from the ceiling, and a chorus of 1000 school children gave the first rendition of "Utah We Love Thee." The six surviving signers of the Utah Constitution still living and Invited to attend the Tabernacle services ser-vices January 4. are: W. J. Kerr. Portland, Oregon; Mons Peterson, Moab, Utah; Elmer E. Corfnnn, Hollywood. California; and No'ole Warrum, Chas. N. Strevell and Louis L. Coray, all of Salt Lake City. |
