These extensive low areas ire separated by the mld-AUant!e rise, one of the longest mountain ranges In the world, but completely complete-ly submerged except for the Asores and Ascension Island. Modern knowledge of this ridge In the Atlantic At-lantic helps keep alive the legend Dt the "lost Atlantis," which Plato described as a populous mid-Atlantic continent that sank beneath the waves 12,000 years ago. The ridge once may have been above water, wa-ter, but most geologists doubt that It sank within recorded time.
