Show CEDAR CITY School Policies By L. C. MILES, Principal Teaching Arts Custom and traditions are essential essen-tial for the continuous progress of the race when used In their proper places. If they are not used properly, proper-ly, they can become the means whereby progress is retarded or even stopped. Often school policies and regulations, regu-lations, if not overhauled and revamped re-vamped from year to year, become llablUttos rattier than assets to growth and development In the lives of our children. In the Cedar City schools our aim is to continuously revise our program, fitting Into new situations that arise and making use of our environment In every way possible and feasible. A good example of this took place Monday when the entire nation na-tion had but one paramount Idea tn mind, namely, our reaction to the terrible treachery that had been thrust upon us by a people apparently appar-ently desirous of peace but later proved to be snakes in the grass. If we had held to customs the students stud-ents would have gone on reading and writing about the Revolutionary Revolution-ary War, the Civil War, and other topics of the distant past. Instead we turned on our radio, tuned In tine various rooms (through our sound system and listened to the President of the United States give Ma message to Congress and later Che two legislative tyxiies make their declaration of war on Japan. At the conclusion of this history making epoch social-living teachers teach-ers discussed the reasons, purposes and possible results of such a momentous mo-mentous telle with the various groups. This is only one example of how present living may present Itself for purposeful teaching. May I ask these questions: (1) In which of the two described situations sit-uations would you learn the most valuable lesson for present living? (2) Which situation would naturally natur-ally have been the most Interesting? In conclusion, may I add that we are proceeding cautiously in the things we teach regarding the war situation for we feel that there are some things hat certain ages are too immaure to understand and profit by. , |
