Show Many Local Cilizeos BellevecTCaughC: In Pacific War Zone News of Japan's surprise attack oa Pearl Harbor and Honolulu early Sunday morning, followed by subsequent sub-sequent reports of the bombing cf the Philippine Islands, brought horror hor-ror and apprehension to every home in Cedar City and vaclnity, not only on-ly because of the unwarranted attack at-tack upon the islands, but because several local citizens were known or believed to have been in the bombed area. Among those who are believed to be either In or near the Hawaiian or Philippine Islands are: Lieutenant and Mrs. El-vln El-vln Wayment, Kent Carpenter, Ros-coe Ros-coe Booth, Lloyd Walker, Douglas McMuIlln, Floyd Heyborne, Mrs. Martha Bralthwaite and four children, child-ren, R. R. Jones, Mr. and Mrs. K. E. Dotson and Mr. and Mrs. BUI Woods. As yet no definite word has I -en received from any of these people to indicate whether or not they had been injured durirur the bombing raids. According to reports, the last letter let-ter from Lieutenant and Mrs. Wayment, Way-ment, son-in-law and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson N. Lunt, had been written last Friday and mailed mail-ed before the attack. It is understood under-stood that Mr. and Mrs. Lunt have placed a long distant call for their daughter, but as we go to press no report has been received. Mr. Carpenter, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Carpenter, was heard of last week when his parents received receiv-ed a letter, postmarked Pearl Harbor, Har-bor, in which he advised them he was enroute to the Philippines. Whether or not he liad left Pearl Harbor before the bombing .took place is unknown. Mr. Booth, a son of Mr. and Mr. John A. Booth recently completed his aviation tralnlntr In Arizona. and received his commission In tha Navy Air Corps with headquarters at Hickun Field In Hawaii where some of the heaviest bombing occurred. oc-curred. He had been in the Islands only a few weeks. Lloyd Walker Is reported to be stationed with the regular army at Schofkld Barracks in Hawaii. Young McMullin and the Hey-borne Hey-borne boy, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Mark C. McMullin and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Heyborne, respectively, are believed to be stationed at the Philippine Islands, Mr. McMullin aboard the USB. Houston, while Mr. Heyborne is believed to be on the USS. New Orleans. The Sher-ratt Sher-ratt youth, a son of Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Sherratt, is believed to be at I Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Mrs. Braithwaite, the former Miss ! Martha Urle of Cedar City, sister to M. J. Urle, together with her , four children, has made her home In Honolulu for several years. Sha spent a few months hi Cedar City 'about a year ago, later returning to Honolulu. Mr. and Mrs. Dotson, brother-in-law and sister of Miss Leone Jex, 1m renorted to be stationed at Pearl Harbor where Mr. Dotson is connected con-nected with the Navy medical corps. Mr. Jones, who will be well rj-mrmbered rj-mrmbered among local people as having been in charge of the Navy Recruiting station In Cedar City for several months before he was ordered to active duty, has been reported re-ported as an officer on the US.S. Oklahoma which was reported la have been set afire by the Japanese Japan-ese during the Sunday attack. No oiflclal confirmation has been received re-ceived regarding the ship or Mr. Jones, however. Mr. and Mrs. Woods, both of whom spent several months working in Cedar City, were recently married In Honolulu, Mrs. Woods being the former Miss Edith Ott. Mr. Woods is nn engineer working in Honolulu. Hono-lulu. Unofficial reports received lust night indicate that Mrs. Woods' father at Payson hnd received word Irom hU daughter that they were ull right following the attack, but we have been unable to confirm this also. While everyone Is waiting anxiously anx-iously to receive some definite word from the war zone, several young men of the community are making plans to enlist in the various armed arm-ed forces. To date we have been Informed of Uiree who have already al-ready gone to Salt Lake City for enlistment. Vernon H, Willis, a well-known BA.C. athlete, left Tuesday morning to enlist hi the Coast Guard. Wednesday morning morn-ing Wesley pryor and John M. Faster. Jr. left to enlist In the Navy. |
