H An increase in child labor during fl the war is reported from every one H of 20 cities visited by agents of the Children's bureau, U. S. Department H of Labor in connection with the Buck- B to School Drive of Children's Year. In u large industrial city of Mia- M soura there was an increase of 143 H per cent in the number of employ- M I ment certificates issued to girls m H 1010-17 over the number issued in M 1015-10. According to reports of the M certificate office the greatest increase H has come from the crammer school H graduates, an unusualy large number B of whom are going to work instead of M to high school. In the year 1917-18 M the same city reported the number of H girls leaving school for work was H smaller than in the previous year, H ami this decrease was attributed in H part to the opening of a new. trade M school for girls and women. B In one New Jersey city, although H the population has increased, the H average daily school attendance has H de 'eased I per cent The children Sl are leaving school as soon as they H are legally able. The greatest de- H crease in enrollment was found in H the 7th and 8th grades. H In a Pennsylvania manufacturing H town the decrease in school enroll- H ment came in the elementary grades.
