If the law maxim that the master mas-ter is responsible for the acts of his servants is to be accepted, then the government cannot clear itself so easily. The fact that the actual murderers are now in civil life, somewhere in Vermont Ver-mont must not be permitted to obscure the other fact that the murder of Father Augustine could not have taken place without the cognizance and cooperation co-operation of commissioned officers, some of whom in all likelihood are still in the- United States service. In The Irish World we find a communication com-munication from a correspondent signing sign-ing himself Daniel J. O'Connor, who was an enlisted man on the gunboat Paragua, on board of which Father Augustine Au-gustine was a prisoner before the 'water 'wa-ter cure" was administered to him. After telling how Father Augustine was forced at the point of a pistol to disguise himself by donning the uniform uni-form of a United States artillery sergeant ser-geant to prevent the native, help on board the -Paragua from recognizing him. the correspondent continues: "About 11 o'clock on this night we sailed down the river. I was on -the mid-watch. Before going on the guard shipmate allowed me to go down and fookat the prisoner. The crew then had all the particulars as to ho he was and what his fate was to be. Padre ISSitine still had tb uniform t on and his hand irons removed. His feet w ere manacled and he was repeating his beads. I asked him if he cared for a Srink. and he aved his hand no 1 remained re-mained about ten minuter and -one of the crew made insulting remarks as to (Continued on Page 7.)
