I h n follow ed a lecture bv Mrs. Abi.H (;r,id Woolson. who held the v .ofsi attention of hr audience. In1 " trH"ft:l and polished English she re-. CI tnity-tl;ree, when she found, the brave Castiliantj in. war ' with the Moors, who threatened to override her country, and put Mohammedanism in place of the Cross. With rare foresight, fore-sight, courage, tact and genius, she overcame her enemies, encouraged her 60,000 loyal soldiers with the inspiration inspira-tion of her own presence and in thanksgiving thanks-giving for the signal victory ordered a Te-Deum to be chanted to the God of hosts and had . the happiness of witnessing wit-nessing this great multitude of loyal Christian soldiers in arms kneel in 1 prayer w hile the great silver cross was raised in benediction over them. Hostilities ended, Isabella turned her attention to' the cultivation of the -arts of peace. Learning, commerce and manufactures flourished and her coun-j coun-j try once more occupied an enviable position among the nations of the earth. During her reign great and memorable historical events were enacted. en-acted. It was at that period that Columbus Co-lumbus discovered a new land and it was to the piety and generosity and foresight of the Christian queen that he was enabled to embark on his memorable mem-orable and providential expedition. The lecturer, in glowing eulogy, said that Isabella's life made other pages of history blacken to bring out the peerless character of Spain's great queen. Her personal character and endowments made her court a model one. After a reign of thirty years. which has never been equalled since by any ruler of her country, she succumbed suc-cumbed to failing health. During her last days she was surrounded .by prelates pre-lates and the great magnates of her court- and amid the tears and over (lowing love of a loyal people she laid I down the sceptre and the crown, re-! re-! signing her soul to the Master whom she served so faithfully. Although, as is well-known, the lecturer lec-turer is not a Catholic, she loves the memory of IsahFlla with the heart of a noble and enlightened woman, who has drank deeply from the fountains of Spanish literature, has made her history his-tory the study of her life, has lived among her people, studied their language, lan-guage, spent years among her mus- eums and archieves and learned to do justice to one of the most heroic characters char-acters that ever wore a. mortal crown. Mrs. Woolson. as the presiding officer of-ficer pointed out. occupies ah enviable position in the field of literature, history his-tory and the arts, enlightening many cultured audiences on points that are often misunderstood and misquoted. Many of her most salient and beautiful quotations are from the pens of Pres-oott Pres-oott and Irving, who have illuminated the pa gets of Spanish and American history. At the close of Mrs. Wool-son's Wool-son's admirable lecture a rising vote of thanks was extended her. Pope Praises German Emperor. Prince Albrecftt, Regent of Brunswick, Bruns-wick, who went to Rome to attend the I christening of Crown Prince Humbert, lunched a few days ago xxith Baron Von Rotenhan, Prussian minister to the Holy See. Among the other guests were Cardinal Cardi-nal Kopp. Bishop of Breslau: Cardinal Fischer. Archbishop of Cologne, and the other German bishops in Rome who took part in the celebration of the golden jubilee of the dogma of the Immaculate Im-maculate Conception. Later Prince Albrecht and Baron Von 'Rotenhan. in a private carriage, followed . by:.' the, prince's suite, , drove to the Vatican. There they were received re-ceived with military honors and were admitted to the presence of the Pope, who said many complimentary things regarding Germany: and especially about Emperor William, adding that he hoped the good relations now existing ex-isting between the Holy See and the German Empire would - grow "even more cordial under" his pontificate.
