Show ACROSS THE CONTINENT IN A TOURIST SLEEPER. A point not generally known is that it is possible to make the trip from ocean to ocean across the United States, in a tourist sleeper. Cars are run on weekly and semi-weekly schedules sche-dules by several of the lines between Boston and Chicago. Western roads operating between Chicago and the Pacific coast carry similar through sleepers, on daily, semi-weekly and tri-weekly schedules. The principal lines run these cars daily out of Chicago Chi-cago and they have proven very popular popu-lar as a means of long distance transportation. trans-portation. The reason for this Is that in these tourist sleepers one enjoys all of the comforts and advantages provided by the standard Pullmans. The cars are manned by uniformed porters and conductors con-ductors as are the standard cars. On certain days of the week the cars are in charge of a special tourist agent, whose duty it is to look out for the welfare of his passengers. The Santa Fe people have done an excellent excel-lent tourist business throughout the summer and prospects are for a winter of continued heavy travel. Thousands of the great middle clasrs of people, particularly those in the cool lake regions, are changing about J in the matter oWheir vacations, and are now going to California in midwinter mid-winter for a period of summer sunshine, sun-shine, as an agreeahle break to the long and tedious ice-bound months. By "traveling tourist" a material reduction re-duction may be secured in the cost of railroad and sleeper tickets, and money thus saved goes far towards paying expenses ex-penses of a sojourn in the land of fruit and flowers. Summer vacations are not to be made light of, for many have to secure respite from work during the hot weather; but there are many more who find it necessary to lice from the clutches of winter, and get outdoor life to recuperate their failing strength. |
