Show WE KNOW THE EAR MARKS. In the following paragraph from the Western Watchman we recognize the earmarks of James M. King, author of "Facing the Twentieth Century": "In a pamphlet spread hereabout, the A. P. A. call Archbishop Ireland the , 'slickest Jesuit schemer this nation has ever seen." McKinley is the Pharaoh of the United States, and to everyone coming to him with a petition he says: 'Go to Ireland.' " It seems that a Methodist Bishop is quite at liberty to approach Mr. McKinley Mc-Kinley without fear of being accused of undue interference with matters of state. But when a Catholic prelate, like Archbishop Ireland, for instance, assumes to exercise the prerogative of his citizenship, he at once brings down upon himself the condemnation of every bigot in the land. ' - Archbishop Ireland, as a citizen, has the same right as any other citizen in the United States, and it is a great pity that his every act is so wilfully misconstrued. . As we have frequently pointed out, the Methodist bishops of the country are on cordial good terms with Mr. McKinley, Mc-Kinley, a fact we are pleased to note, and we cannot understand why the president's . friendship for : the Archbishop Arch-bishop of St. Paul should meet with such bitter condemnation by men who look on the President's friendship for other denominations with a kindly, eye. |
