Show Toledo Catholics Resent Play. The Federation of Catholic Societies of Lucas county made a strong protest against the production in Toledo of "Don Carlos," the Schiller drama being revived this season by Richard Mansfield. Mans-field. . In the course of an able and comprehensive letter on the play in tho Toledo Blade, Rev. I. H. Muehlenbeck,. chairman of the committee of literature and the press., said: "Religious practices prac-tices and doctrines are dwelt upon in such a manner as to shock Catholics i and to promote in non-Catholics preju-' preju-' dice and aversion. In the name of historical his-torical truth, in the name of literarv taste, iiv the name of religious toleration,- and in tho interest of Schiller's well-earned 1 reputation, wc sincerely ! lament the fact that Don Carlos i.s to j engage the minds of the American j public. 1 "A translation by Bovlan will be j used. Judicious omissions will, we hope, eliminate some objectionable features: but they can never elevate this drama to the dignity of a masterpiece. We are entirely at a loss how to account for it that the crreat actor. Richard Mansfield, Mans-field, selected Don Carlos as the ve- . hide to exhibit his histrionic ability. "and why Toledo was chosen as the favorite fa-vorite city for its production. Did ho not dare to produce Don Carlo:--in the cultured cities of tho onst? If so, then indeed, the first production in Toledo . would be a. doubtful compliment for the city. If the citizens of Toledo have so far spent for this honor then they have indeed been duped in a famous fa-mous degree. But it is evident that not Don Carlos, but Richard Mansfield, Is the drawing card. Whether Mansfield Mans-field has acted wisely an intelligent public will soon deride." |
