Show Bishop of London and Birthrate. (London Catholic Times.) We expressed the hope some time ago that Anglican clergymen would speak out strongly upon the decline of the birth rate. The Anglican Bishop of London dealt with the subject in his visitation charge, and we congratulate him on the firmnes of his tone. Quoting Quot-ing Professor Taylor, he said that what was first encouraged ' and taught in England some thirtyrflve years ago has gradually spread like a blight over the middle-class population of the land. To stem this gigantic evil he summoned sum-moned the forces of the Church of England. Eng-land. ' The Roman Church all honor to. it had, lie said, never wavered- in opposition to it, and it would ill become be-come the Church of England to con- , demn less clearly a practice which, if continued, must eat away the . heart and drain away , the life-blood of the land. The bishop attributed ' It to . a growing selfishness which thinks of comforts and social pleasures before primary duties. He advocates a return re-turn to the simpler, harder life by thosa who. laid the foundation of the coun try's greatness. The diagnosis Is to a large extent correct,' but It seems to us that what- is- most essential s a strengthening of the moral fibre, which can only be effected by deepening the faith. - |
