Scanlan was born in Tipperary, Ireland, Oct. 3, 1843. 4- His classical studies were made in Thurlea and were completed in. 4- 4- 1S63. He entered his collegiate cours2 in September of the same year 4- 4- at All Hallows college, Dublin, on June 24, 1S68,- he was ordained a 4 4 priest of the Holy Roman Catholic Church for the Archdiocese of San 4 Francisco. The following October he reached his adopted mission and was appointed assistant pastor to the old St. Patrick's Church, then on 4 Market street. San Francisco. At the completion of the new St. Patrick's 4 Church on Mission street, he was transferred and served as an as- 4 sistant for more than a year. He was next transferred to St. Mary's 4. 4 Cathedral where he labored only for a few months, owing to ill health. 4. From St. Mary's he was sent to Woodland, - Cal. - In 1S71 he was ap- 4 pointed pastor of Pioche, New, exchanging his jurisdiction at the same 4 time from Archbishop Alemany of San Francisco, to Bishop O'Connell of 4 Marysville. In Pioche he labored for two years, erecting a nice church. 4 In 1ST3 he was recalled to San Francisco, where he again came under 4 the jurisdiction of Archbishop Alemony. After his arrival in San Fran- 4 4 cisco ho was appointed pa.-ir f rw-jjuma, Cal., where he remained until 4 June Of the same year, when he ws, 5 appointed to succeed Rev, Father 4 - Walsh in Utah, ne reefed .a pallium on June 29, 1887.
